If UDel has long been one of the best-kept secrets in higher education, the secret is now out. Owing in part to the baby boom of the early 1990’s that has pushed applications to unprecedented levels at many schools over the past few years, the number of applications to UDel – as well as the quality of the applicants – has been skyrocketing. As the only major institution of higher learning in Delaware, its in-state appeal is obvious, but out-of-state applications, primarily from the mid-Atlantic states, have climbed significantly as well. In a situation highly unusual for a state university, UDel actually enrolls more out-of-state students than in state students: in fact, the out-of-state population is actually double the size of the in-state population. This is largely due to Delaware’s small size, but still, it sends a clear message about the university’s overall quality. More than 25,000 students applied for freshman admission in 2008-2009, and successful applicants generally score at least 600 on each section of the SAT.

University of Delaware students boast high levels of achievement both during their time at the university and after graduation. UDel has the longest tradition of study abroad programs in the country, and nearly half of all UDel students study abroad at some point before they graduate. Students travel to more than 50 countries and upon graduation, every student who has gone abroad wears a sash indicating the country where he or she has studied. Several alumni have won prestigious Macarthur “genius” grants, and in the last twenty years, four UDel seniors have been awarded Rhodes scholarships – highly unusual for mid-ranked state university. UDel’s faculty is no less accomplished. It includes professors who have won some of their profession’s highest honors, including the Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes. The university also participates in a program run by the National Science Foundation that awards grants to outstanding young professors whose research is likely to make an impact on their field.

The University of Delaware has a number of features that distinguish it typical state school: first, fewer than half of the students are from in-state (although this is perhaps also due to Delaware’s status as the second-smallest state in the country); second, although the university was incorporated as land-grant institution in the late 19th century, it was actually founded as a private academy in 1743; and finally, although the university’s teams compete in the Division I conference, sports are definitely second-rank compared to academics. In addition, the university of Delaware has a long history of innovative study abroad: the university founded the first American study abroad program (in Paris) in 1923 and continues to be a leader in that area. As is true for many land grant institutions, programs in the natural sciences tend to be strong: Animal Science, Chemical Engineering, and Nursing are all top programs, but the graduate program in Art History is also very widely respected. As UD has become an increasingly popular choice, admissions have consequently become more selective, and UD now accepts just under fifty percent of its applicants.

Delaware has been called one of the "public ivy leagues". Education is top notch but alot of students start their weekends on Wednesday nights. Easily one of the biggest party schools on the east coast. Also the women are amazing. last year on college humors hottest college girl a girl from UD won, the runner up was also from UD.

i graduated a long time ago, but i thought delaware was awesome. as much as it's known as a party school, the education you can get there was top notch. i thought all the professors in my major and minor [english/history] were terrific. [i didn't have as much luck with pscyh, poly sci, or sciences, though.] one thing, girls, please know that the ratio of girls to guys was 3 to 2, so it can be tough to find a date.

I graduate from UD in 2000; it was a party haven back then. The Balloon was in full effect, and Thursday night was the night to be out...the rest of the weekend rocked, but no one ever missed mug night. Heard it's not the same without the balloon, but there are still fun bars there now.
I have no regrets about UD, except don't have class on Fridays!

Big party school...every night is party night. You can't go anywhere on this campus, day or night, without seeing people walking to and from bars, parties, etc.
