Academics at UCF
The University of Central Florida is not known for its academic programs, that’s for sure. But, just because there isn’t an idyllic reputation floating about doesn’t mean that students and faculty don’t take school seriously. There are a number of different academic programs to choose from, and those students who commit to serious academic study are sure to get a lot out of their four years at UCF. Additionally, the acceptance rate at UCF is constantly becoming more and more competitive. The acceptance rate hovers around just fifty percent.
The university is divided up into different colleges, each of which offer a number of different programs for students to choose from. There is a College of Arts and Humanities, College of Education, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and nine others. Within these colleges there are programs as varied as Elementary Education and marketing—something for everyone in every field!
Life at UCF
Life at the University of Central Florida is pretty exciting. Studying isn’t usually a high priority amongst students, but having a good time is, and there are lots of ways to do just that. You can always hit Disney World, which is nearby, but the university has other programs that most students find a little more appealing than Mickey & Co.
There are almost four hundred different student organizations on campus. There are over thirty honors societies on campus, but if you’re looking for something a little less bookish, you’re sure to find that, too. There are a number of intramural sports teams, religious groups, language groups, performing arts groups, and more. There is also a very active Greek system at UCF.
In addition to school-sponsored events, the students at UCF also manage to make the most of their extracurricular time: there are almost always an array of parties to choose from, and not a day of the week goes by without some sort of event or party to help take your mind off of homework!
UCF: Size, Not Smarts
The University of Central Florida, located in Orlando, is the fifth biggest university in the United States with over fifty thousand students (about forty thousand are undergraduates). The university is surprisingly young (founded in 1963, the university is less than fifty years old), but in that short time it has managed to grow tremendously.
As such a large and fast-growing institution, more and more students are gaining access to higher education. With over two hundred undergraduate programs to choose from, there is seemingly something for everyone. This abundance of programs and large number of students has its downsides though, too.
The student to faculty ratio is right around thirty to one, which is more than five times as many students to one faculty member as you might find at a more elite institution. With such little time for individual attention, many students find themselves skating under the radar at UCF. Although there are programs for tutoring and academic support, this university is not very well known for its academic rigor and/or support.
