It’s a private school. It’s elite. It’s competitive. And it’s in Boston. Put all of these things together and it is no small wonder that MIT costs nearly $50,000. But, don’t run screaming yet. MIT also offers scholarships and financial aid to around 80% of their undergraduate students, which means that it really isn’t as bad as you might think. So is it worth it?
The faculty to student ratio is right around 7:1, and most classes have less than 10 students. With an internationally recognized faculty, those statistics alone speak to the quality of education you’ll get at MIT.
MIT also has amazing campus resources. It is (for good reason) one of the most technologically sound campuses out there, and the classrooms are equipped with all of the latest technology, so whether it is just a SmartBoard or a million-dollar piece of medical equipment, all of that is at your fingertips. Yes, MIT is an expensive school, but you get what you pay for there—which is all of the best in technology and attention in your classes.

As its name suggests, MIT is an “institute of technology,” but some people aren’t entirely sure what that means. Computer science and engineering are two of the most popular majors at MIT, but students also study things as various as business, anthropology, urban planning, and even foreign languages. Just because it is an institute of technology doesn’t mean they don’t also have programs in the humanities and liberal arts, too. Don’t be afraid of studying there if you also want your fill of literature or history, just remember that a degree from MIT is usually associated with technologies, so you’re more likely to get respect with a degree in biotechnology than you are in creative writing.
You might have an image of the MIT student as one with a pocket protector and calculator… and it’s true, there are a few people wandering around campus who fit that bill, but with the range of programs available, you’re sure to find people with all kinds of interest and varying degrees of academic intensity—these days you’re much more likely to see people walking around campus with their iPhones than with their calculators!

Located in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and minutes away from Boston, MIT is an excellent choice for students looking for serious study. Although MIT is known for having a rather unattractive campus, it is also known internationally as having one of the best academic programs around, and students are always more than able to find beauty and intrigue within minutes of campus.
The rumor around Boston is that nobody studies harder than an MIT student, and they’re probably not kidding. MIT is known for its rigor and high expectations, but those expectations usually pay off. It is one of the most selective schools in the US, which explains why over 90% of the student population comes from out of state (and often out of country) to attend this elite institution.
Almost half of MIT graduates go on to graduate school, but the other half are usually able to find careers with relative ease. After four years (well over three quarters of students finish within four years) of hard work, students are set for success in work or further studies.

MIT's commitment to marrying education with the creation of knowledge provides a fertile setting for research that has spawned a host of scientific breakthroughs and technological advances. Past achievements include the creation of modern food preservation processes, the first chemical synthesis of penicillin and vitamin A, the development of inertial guidance systems, modern technologies for artificial limbs, high-speed photography, and the magnetic core memory that made possible the development of digital computers.
