In an attempt to boost USC’s stature in the rankings (it is currently ranked 108th among national research universities), the university’s administration has decided to allot money to the school’s strongest programs in order to boost its national and international stature. Practically speaking, this means that large amounts of money are currently being funneled into the already excellent Medical School and many science programs. The university is currently in the midst of constructing a research village called Innovista, which attempts to blend private and public sector activity along with mixed-use retail and housing in order to attract highly skilled workers. Research focuses include nanotechnology and alternative sources of energy. What the results of this emphasis on improving the university’s research stature will be for undergraduates is unclear. Though the academic profile of successful USC applicants has jumped considerably over the past couple of years, it seems clear that the university’s main priority is boosting its research profile.

Although the flagship campus of University of South Carolina is not nearly as well-known for its academics as is the flagship campus of the University of North Carolina, USC nevertheless has a number of strong academic programs. USC often competes with Clemson for Business students, but USC has a clear advantage in terms of its undergraduate international business program, which has been ranked #1 in the country for the past 12 years; its graduate program in international business is ranked #2. Graduate programs in Sociology and Psychology also rank in the top five nationally. The Honors College draws top students from across South Carolina and the country; however, admission is extremely competitive. Admitted students often have weighted GPAs of well over 4.0, and SAT scores (excluding Writing) are in the mid-1400’s. The Honors College offers well over 100 courses, and unlike students in many other honors programs who only need to take special seminars, USC honors students are required to complete a Senior Thesis.

The University of South Carolina is a quintessential Southern state school, combining solid academic programs with big-time football and a thriving party scene. Founded in 1805, USC is one of the older state universities, and the campus still contains many of the original Georgian brick buildings. About 27,000 students (18,000 undergraduates) are enrolled at the university’s flagship campus, and more then 350 degree programs are available. Top-ranked programs are available in international business and media and health librarianship, and the Music school is also well respected. About three-quarters of students are from South Carolina, with the remainder coming primarily from elsewhere in the South. In terms of diversity, USC does better than a lot of other state schools, with over 17% of students from underrepresented minority groups. Although the university is large, the administration makes a serious effort to make students feel at home: the entire incoming freshman class is required to read the same book before arriving on campus, and freshman English seminars are capped at 24. The university also sponsors a number awards for undergraduate research projects.
