    Student Life at Vanderbilt University
At Vanderbilt University, students have a wide variety of academic programs to choose from. The most popular undergraduate degrees are in sociology, psychology and engineering (which one might expect from a research university), but all students are required to take courses in a variety of fields. All students must take composition and foreign languages for example. Students can then go on to study in fields including molecular biology, midwifery, Russian, or E-Commerce.
In addition to a breadth of academic programs, Vanderbilt also has a very active campus scene. There are hundreds of clubs and organizations that students can join, ranging from independent publications to religious groups to community service groups. Students are required to live on campus unless they are living with a relative in the county, and as such, students do their best to make the most of on-campus life. At present the school is reportedly restructuring some of the on-campus housing, so soon there may be new or updated facilities available for students!

    A Strong Tradition of Research
Vanderbilt is a very proud research university. It is one of the top-ranking schools for research output, and the university is not afraid to boast about its many respected alumni. Notable alumni include people as varied as Amy Grant and Bill Frist! Their school of medicine is one of the most highly funded in the country, and other departments, including the comparative literature department, have earned international prestige in recent years for different sorts of scholarship.
As a research university, some prospective students might worry that there isn’t much time for undergraduates, but this generally isn’t the case at Vanderbilt. The student to faculty ratio is about 9:1, and most classes and labs have less than twenty students. Although some students acknowledge that they think the graduate programs get more attention, they also report that professors are generally good about making themselves available and being willing to provide extra academic support.

    Vanderbilt: The Basics
Vanderbilt University is located in Nashville, Tennessee. Downtown is within walking distance, which means that students can enjoy a bit of city life during their four years. The campus, though, which is over 300 acres, is actually a national arboretum and despite its urban location, Vanderbilt maintains a nice, traditional college feel.
It is a private research university, and there are about 6,500 undergraduate students attending. These students come from all over, both nationally and internationally, and as a result, Vanderbilt has earned a reputation all over the world.
Although it is internationally known, only about eight percent of the students are international students. There is some diversity on campus, but around three quarters of the students are Caucasian. The students are split fairly evenly between men and women. Although diversity may not be the university’s strongest suit, most students report that the campus is accepting and welcoming to all students, which is perhaps even more important than numbers alone.
